While an official date for the change of hands has yet to be confirmed, for nearly seven decades, this establishment has been dishing out delicious meals and creating lasting memories for generations of customers.
Steeped in the tradition of home-style cooking and warm hospitality, The Bagel has roots that reach back to Danny Wolf’s parents and grandparents, who brought their treasured recipes and kitchen skills from Europe. As you plan your visit, you can expect to find both familiar favorites and exciting new menu selections and can take advantage of the convenient free parking lot on Barry Street.
The Bagel’s menu, filled with dishes like lokshen noodle pudding, beef borscht, gefilte fish, and matzo ball soup, is a testament to the multigenerational recipes passed down within the Wolf family.
The Bagel’s late owner, Danny Wolf, who passed away at the age of 77 in July 2022, left behind a legacy that transcends the boundaries of a typical deli. His story is one of resilience and hope, having been liberated from Theresienstadt, a Czech concentration camp, at the age of just 10 months. Wolf’s life journey led him to steward The Bagel into a safe haven for Holocaust survivors like himself.
Marvin Barsky, now 78 years old, stands at the pinnacle of his career, and his journey to becoming the new owner of The Bagel Restaurant and Deli is on the horizon. Just recently this year, Barsky assumed the mantle of ownership, marking the first change in ownership in 54 years, according to the previously mentioned Chicago Tribune article.
