The new cafe will open on the ground floor of a condo building after ownership secured one of the city’s community development grants, according to Block Club Chicago. Owner Ricardo Acebedo-Diaz tells What Now Chicago he hopes to open Magnifico Coffee around the end of the month, possibly next month, but wasn’t able to confirm an official opening date. He and his siblings/ co-owners, Angelica Acebedo and Marisol Acebedo Fisher, initially hoped to open this cafe in the Summer of 2022 but faced several delays.

“We’re just so excited. We cannot wait to open our doors,” Angelica Acebedo tells Block Club Chicago. “I want to get permission to throw a big party so we can get a Colombian band. We’re just so excited to share our culture through that cup of coffee,” she said.

The grant was funded by the Chicago Recovery Fund and Tax Increment Finance (TIF) dollars and aims to help entrepreneurs open or upgrade their businesses. It is unclear exactly how much Magnifico Coffee will receive, but the 26 recipients received grants between $250,000 and $5 million. The new business will hopefully celebrate Colombian culture, which is often misrepresented, according to Angelica Acebedo.

“If you see Colombia [on TV or in movies], of course, there’s the coffee, but also the drug dealers,” she said. “This whole idea of sharing a cup of coffee in Colombia and breaking bread — it’s so important for us to share a little bit of our culture.”
