Tatas Tacos has been around since 2018, when owner Marci Berner opted to open the first location in Six Corners. In just over three years, the eatery has added a Lake View location and morphed from its original express model into a full-service restaurant. Now, the taqueria plans to bring its crafted tacos to South Loop.
Tatas Tacos is the first restaurant announced for Lendlease’s Southbank development along the south branch of the Chicago River. According to a press release, Tatas will open in The Cooper, or the 29-story luxury apartment complex in Printers Row.
“The Cooper is a great place to be because it really connects the whole city,” Berner said, speaking with What Now Chicago. “I grew up in Pilsen, and when I was an adult I moved to the North Side, but no matter what you do in the city you have to go through there…it’s a gateway.”
Tatas is currently in the process of building out the 5,643 square-foot restaurant space at 720 S. Wells St and plans for a spring 2022 opening, although so much of that depends on ordering and permitting, processes made slower by the pandemic. Even so, Berner is upbeat and excited about the process. “We’re an all-woman team. Not only are we women owners, but we have women architects and women construction workers. It’s really exciting to be able to do that,” she added.
You can expect the same craft tacos you’ve come to know and love prepared in the eatery’s largest restaurant yet. The menu will have weekend and chef’s special tacos along with its core menu. There will be an express section for pick-up and take-out orders as well as a full-service restaurant with a full bar.
If all goes as expected, look for Tatas Tacos The Cooper to open by April 2022.
