Not much is known about the new 1,076 square-foot coffee shop, other than it will be serving Big Shoulders Coffee. The space is currently under construction, but the company’s Instagram suggests the new cafe will open sometime in May 2022. It is unknown if the cafe will serve anything other than Big Shoulders Coffee, but guests will likely find some sort of snacks or pastries. Customers will also find a giant red fire hydrant in the back of the cafe, according to a recent Instagram post, proving the company is close to opening but still renovating.

This will be an excellent opportunity for the owners, who are still unknown at this point. The new Engine Coffee will be one of the only coffee shops in Noble Square, only having to compete with Standing Passengers. There are a handful of coffee shops on Division Street, including high-end coffee bar Intelligentsia Coffee Wicker Park Coffeebar and Philz Coffee. Now, the new cafe will become the primary coffee spot for residents and visitors of Ashland Avenue, including the Chicago Fire Department’s Engine 30 Station.

“We love great coffee, just like you,” according to their website. “And we’re well aware that you’ve got a gazillion amazing coffee options nearby. Our goal is to give our neighbors—and firefighters from down the block, hence the theme!—a relaxed go-to spot where the offerings are affordable and the experience is completely pretense-free.”
