This new location comes from a recent $7.25 million grant that helps twenty-six businesses and nonprofit organizations. Sputnik Coffee will receive $1.2 million to revitalize a 27,375 square-foot building into the company’s new flagship cafe, according to Block Club Chicago. Co-owners Vova Kagan, Greesha Kagan, Diarmuid Horan, and Michael Roytman first opened the coffee shop in early 2017 in Back of the Yards, not too far from this new location. The owners are using the money to ease the financial burden of having to “gut rehab” the building.

“We either pay more to fix it than build from scratch, or you demo it,” Vovan Kagan tells the publication. “This lets the community keep a landmark building. Our goal is to become a community hub.”

This will be the second location for Sputnik Coffee Co., following its original location at 2057 W 51st St. There is no set opening date. The new site will serve as a commercial roastery with a large cafe for guests. There will also be a conference room that members of the public, entrepreneurs, and neighborhood organizations can rent for meetings. When this location opens, guests can expect the same delicious medium roast they serve at their original cafe.

“Sputnik Coffee Company was born from the notion that coffee could (and should) be delicious and affordable,” according to the company’s website. “Unsatisfied with the lackluster brews in their office coffee pots, Sputnik founders began to roast coffee in the comfort of their homes but soon discovered that replacing bland blends inside and outside the workplace proved to be cumbersome and expensive. What first began as a modest quest for quality coffee would take off to become one of Chicago’s notable roasters.”
