Cute as a Cupcake, the cupcakery and bake shop found in Merrillville Business Complex, is opening a new location in Schererville at 727 Main St.
The company’s second location will replace CPR Cell Phone Repair across the street from the Town Square Shopping Center, according to NWI Times. The new 1,190-square-foot location will sit next to Oberweis, while other tenants in the complex include Smoothie King, Starbucks, and Jersey Mikes. Owner Michelle Wainwright hopes to open the new storefront early next year, hopefully before Valentine’s Day, but she tells the publication the opening date is still “up in the air,” as equipment still needs to be delivered.
“We’re super excited about it,” Wainwright tells NWI Times. “We wanted to do an expansion east toward Porter County, but this deal came up. We have a lot of customers from out that way who say they only come to Merrillville to shop at Costco or Sam’s Club, so this will be more convenient for them.”
Wainwright launched Cute as a Cupcake in 2015 after losing her job and opened a brick-and-mortar bakery at 2008 W. 81st Avenue the following year. Other than dozens of different cupcake options, some items found at her bake shop include cookies, cake pops, banana pudding, and cocoa bombs. Wainwright has been selling these products through food trucks, fairs, farmer’s markets, and even by going to Universities during the warmer months. Now she continues to grow the business with a second brick-and-mortar coming soon.
“I think we’re successful because of a quality product and the customer service,” she said. “As a small business, we know customers sustain us and that it’s significant that they spend their money with us. We have a level of appreciation for our customers. We know they could spend their money elsewhere. It’s the quality of the product that has helped us stay around.”
